Divorcing couples 'putting off reaching a settlement'
Practice area: Family Law
Couples who are getting a
divorce are increasingly putting off reaching a financial settlement, according to a new study.
Research by Unbiased.co.uk found that 48 per cent of solicitors have seen their clients choose to wait until a later date to divide their assets.
This has been attributed partly to the recession, as many estranged couples want to wait until the economy picks up and the value of their assets increases.
Meanwhile, more than two-fifths of solicitors said the time it is taking people to reach a
divorce settlement has gone up in the last year.
Legal specialists again attributed this to people waiting until the economy turns around.
However, Unbiased.co.uk warned that the recession could also prompt many people to put off seeking legal advice on divorce and
separation matters.
Indeed, 50 per cent of solicitors said the number of
divorce clients they have dealt with has dropped slightly since 2008.
This comes after a study by accountancy firm Grant Thornton found that a large number of
divorce lawyers across the country believe the recession could lead to fewer couples choosing to separate.
