Divorce cases 'most common in January'
Practice area: Family Law
January is the peak month for getting a
divorce in the UK, according to the Law Society.
The legal organisation has stated that the stress of the recession combined with the family arguments which often occur over Christmas are likely to contribute to more couples deciding on a
separation.
As a result, the body has called on those affected to ensure they seek legal advice as soon as possible in order to avoid potential complications.
Among the potential advantages of consulting solicitors is the provision of fairer financial settlements, as well as an increased likelihood of avoiding a court case.
Robert Heslett, the Law Society's president, added that a family lawyer can "help you identify the issues that the court will consider, sort the wheat from the chaff, give tactical advice and may even save you time and money".
This echoes advice given by consumer advice service Unbiased.co.uk this week, which recommended that divorcing couples seek professional advice as soon as possible to ensure that fair settlements are reached in a timely manner.
